This thread has been provided to discuss issues concerning fireworks and whether hobby rocketry should distance itself totally from them! What are your views?? 30 day poll added.

I think that fireworks are not a problem, just some of the people that inevitably abuse them. Much the same as the way many people abuse rocketry products in my local area.
As many of them give me a bad name, my answer was to start a group and give them an opportunity to do so legitamately.

Fireworks may be an interesting accompaniment to a launch day as in my eyes, it would create a biogger event and draw more attention to rocketry.
More demand and attention to such a hobby can only make it more popular and hence increase demand for products. This in turn would lead to cheaper products and possibly more Australian manufacturers.

There is an old saying I find relevant "keep your friends close and your enemies closer"

that is not so say that I see fireworks as an enemy.

yes we should be distanced because if we come under  fireworks we might have to end up paying more and be up for tougher rules or restrictions.

Thats a good point...

I was suggesting a mutual co-existance, not a merging of groups.

fire works is nothing but a problem for rocketry and needs to be kept far away from each other

some time ago a certain fireworks company that resides in QLD marketed a firework as a model rocket and was selling them everywhere it nearly caused rocketry in AUS to be banned if it was not for DT , rocketry would be banned so some food for thought there

Hmm that is a solid point.

And to be quite honest, I see very little similarity to the two.

I mean you cant exactly start a "fireworks club"

fireworks in WA is well legislated, it's the other states that are the problem. For that reason, ARA should not be said in the same sentence as fireworks.

I agree with Slave.
Rocketry and Fireworks are 2 separate and entirely different things.

really there not even in the same boat
but they are paddeling on the same lake
hpr fire work are pretty much a shaped charge fired from a cannon
where rockets there are measures set in place for a controlled accent an descent
there are some really good honest pyrotecnitians out there i know an they
are some good honest law abiding people but then you have not fire works but fire crackers
dangerous un controled an unstable an sold by dodgey truckies
good fun till one of your best high school buddies loses three fingers
we could probally learn alot from pyros but its probally i good idea to keep the two seperated
considering the bad press vibe that follows fireworks an the dodgey dealings from some states.
Saying that .What do we do if the cops show up at a launch an try to shut us down?
should we clear it with the local constabulary before a launch an inform them about what where doin or somethin like that?

I have already spoken to the local police, council and worksafe about the club and they asked only to be notified of launch days.
I have a couple of ex-workmates that work in the local police force that are of great assistance to me.
I doubt highly that we will have any issues with the police at a launch day, as I have followed the laws and regulations all the way.

There shouldnt be issues with police unless you are doing something illegal. CASA and worksafe VIC would be the main depts keeping an eye out, Drano seems to have everything covered once all the CASA permissions are finalized and when you are ready proceedures to obtain high power permits will be underway.
